I moved to Powell River a few months ago for a slower pace and more nature, but settling in was harder than I expected. It’s not like Vancouver where everything is online and one click away.

There’s something weirdly satisfying about stumbling into a local spot that becomes your go-to. Like, not because you planned it or researched it to death, but because you happened to need something at the right time and found the right person. I think some of the best parts of a place show up when you’re not really looking, just paying attention.
That totally resonates. I’ve been in Prince George my whole life and still found myself struggling to discover new places—especially when I wanted to support smaller businesses instead of just hitting the same chains all the time. It got worse during the pandemic when a bunch of places closed or moved and the info online didn’t keep up. I started a little side gig making candles and bath products, and even just getting people to know I exist was a whole thing. Setting up a big website didn’t make sense yet, so I added my info to this business directory bc. Didn’t expect much at first, but I’ve had a surprising number of customers say they found me there. What I like is how it feels actually made for people in BC—not just dumped together from everywhere. It has all the small service folks, the one-person operations, the local farms and such that usually get buried online. And when I’m trying to find something new—like a local garden centre or someone to fix a window—it’s super easy to search and doesn’t feel like I’m sorting through fake reviews or businesses that aren’t even in the area. It’s kinda nice having a go-to place where I don’t feel like I’m being upsold or misled. Feels like it was made by people who actually live here.
